Working with Railroads
The ORDC assists with railroad-roadway coordination by providing technical assistance to ODOT District project managers and area engineers, local municipalities, contractors, and others regarding railroad issues & requirements for public projects.
Ohio's largest railroads, CSX and Norfolk Southern, publish Public Projects Manuals to assist public entities in interacting with their organizations. Regional and short-line railroads often publish information on their websites to identify appropriate processes and contacts. If needed, ORDC is happy to assist Ohio communities with identifying the correct railroad contacts.
For additional information on railroad coordination for public roadways and bridges, please contact Rich Behrendt, ODOT State Rail Coordinator and ORDC Technical Projects Manager, at (614) 387-3097 or by email at email@example.com.
Report Safety Concern at a Rail Crossing
To report a safety emergency, call the railroad at the number listed on the blue sign or dial 911. For non-emergency concerns such as rough crossing surfaces, use the PUCO Rail Contact Form.
Report a Blocked Crossing
The ORDC partners with other entities to ensure rail crossing safety, including blocked crossing reporting.
Railroad Development Contacts
Railroads' Business Development staff help businesses looking to locate or expand in Ohio to utilize their respective railroad’s services to ship and receive products.
Railroads' Public Projects Manuals
Projects on Ohio's more than 5,000 miles of active rail and 127,000 miles of roadway frequently intersect. Railroads' public projects resources help navigate public infrastructure projects with railroad interaction.
