On March 18, 2020, the Ohio Rail Development Commission (ORDC) approved a grant award in the amount of $21,000 to UFSCO, Inc., dba United Freezer and Storage Company, to help reconfigure a rail spur at their Youngstown, Ohio facility. The ORDC grant will retain 10 existing positions and assist the company in maintaining its current operations as part of a $42,000 project at the Youngstown facility. This project will allow the company to reduce a curvature in their current rail spur which will enable them to begin receiving 72-foot rail cars which cannot traverse the spur in its current design.
Founded in 1950, United Freezer and Storage has operated over the years as a warehouse/distribution center providing logistics support for many local, regional, and national companies. The company operates four facilities in the Youngstown area providing distribution services, transportation services, and other value-added services, such as temperature monitoring, labeling, and specialized packaging.
Matthew Dietrich, Executive Director of the ORDC, said, “It is always our goal to assist existing Ohio businesses who are making investments in our state. This project is an example of how relatively small investments can have a big impact on existing businesses. This grant to United Freezer and Storage will enhance their ability to expand the company’s rail capabilities and secure new business,” he said.
John Pendel, president of UFSCO, said, “Receiving this grant with the Regional Chamber’s assistance is just plain awesome. As a small regional player in the third-party warehousing arena, this grant is very important to us and will make a huge impact with securing the rail business, which is retiring the smaller 50’ railcars. Thank you, Ohio Rail Development Commission!”
ORDC assists Ohio companies and communities in creating and retaining jobs by preserving rail service to existing shippers and providing rail service to new customers. In addition, the ORDC funds projects to improve railroad-highway grade crossings to increase safety to the traveling public. Please remember, when around railroad tracks always expect a train. Rail lines in Ohio are private property and trespassing is both strictly prohibited and extremely dangerous.
